The Department of English and Linguistics was started in the year 1983. Initially, Prin. P.K. Deshmukh, Prof. R.G. Joshi and Prof. S.B. Chavan were the teachers. In 1983, Prof. (Dr.) R.M. Ingale joined the Department. In 1989, Prof. A.N. Sapali joined the Department. Prof. V.R. Surve, Prof. (Dr.) S.V. Shinde and Prof. (Dr.) H.K. Awatade also joined the services in the year 1991, 1994 and 1995 respectively. Now the department is headed by Prof. (Dr.) H.K. Awatade.
At B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc., an Ability Enhancement Course to improve the language skills of students is introduced under NEP 2020 pattern. It also runs Linguistics and English (DSC) subjects at B.A. I. English (Major) is introduced from B.A. II and B.A. III. The Department runs two certificate courses entitled ‘The Skill Development Course in English’ and ‘Certificate Course in Translation Studies’. In addition to this, there is PG (MA) and Ph.D. Research Centre in the Department. The M.A. (English) Programme is introduced in the college form 2005-06 and the Ph.D. research center was started in the year 2015-16 and since its inception the students have acquired Ph.D. degree successfully from the center. There is a good tradition of results both at UG and PG Programmes. Many students have secured good marks in University Examinations of PAH Solapur University, Solapur and some have been the recipients of the Gold Medals for getting first rank in University at M.A. (Entire English).
